When I started working on the 7th Sea demo for Girls of Darwa Town, I quickly realized that I needed to upgrade a few elements of my recording rig – particularly my monitors. Well, “upgrade” isn’t quite the right word considering that I didn’t actually have ay monitors. Truth be told, up until that point I’d been mixing with Apple’s iPhone earbuds. And, as it turns out, those are embarrassingly terrible to mix on.

So yesterday I decided to take the plunge and get some proper pro studio monitors. Boy, what a difference they made! I could actually hear frequencies that I couldn’t hear before! I could get an idea of where everything sat in the mix! I could actually hear enough to learn what needed work! For a baby recording producer like me, it was a game changer.

To test these new monitors out, I decided to go back and remix Riot in the Miskatonic Morgue, one of the old Awful Lot tunes. Riot was the first song I ever wrote with my buddy Patrick McMahon, and I though it would be a fitting first song to test out the monitors. I’d originally mixed this version using my earbuds, and, predictably, the mix sounded muddy and terrible. It deserved better, and so I went back to give it another pass.

Please take a listen and let me know what you think!
